Can I Use the Same Canister for both Fresh and Salt Water Tanks
Sometimes the question “can I use my freshwater canister filter for a marine aquarium” pops up and the answer to that question is yes as long as you clean the filter first.
Mechanically most external filters don’t mind working in an salt or fresh water environment. The mechanics just don’t change. Your filters pump is powering the water flow through your filter no matter if it’s salt or fresh water.
The differences start at the filter media you’re using. As an example in a fresh we use Zeolite filters to absorb ammonium from the water, but this trick doesn’t work with salt water. The same hold true for some "scavenger resins" used in some canisters.
Thus you can use the same external filter but will sometimes need different filter media. The mechanical and sponge filtration remains the same. Most biological filtration remains the same and most media are developed for use in both environments anyway. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer.
There is one thing to keep in mind though; a marine aquarium is often more susceptible to small disturbances in balance then a fresh water tank. This makes maintenance of the filter and it’s media to a top priority.
In a marine aquarium you will often use a protein skimmer; this won’t work in a fresh water aquarium.
So canister filters can are usually suitable for fresh as well as salt water but there are some differences in the filter media used. A protein skimmer is great for marine, but it won’t work in your fresh water tank. More often than not you will want a higher flow-rate of water in a marine aquarium.

My salt water fish tank is kinda cloudy?
Alright the other day i got sand to start my new saltwater tank off. it was the good kind called ocean direct... i put 2 bags in my 46 gallon tank, and mixed the water separate. it was kinda cloundy when i got it all in there.. i got a rena canister filter and its been running all night and it is clear but like a foggy look.. idk what to do.. and how long intill i can put fish/ shrimp in it?

The sump cost more than the tank. All I have is one puffer in a 100 gallon tank. I was thinking of purchasing the Fluval 405 or Rena X4. Will it work? How come the local pet shop keep nagging me about a sump and that it's a "must have"?

I am trying to jump up to a 200 gallon but must sell this tank setup first. How much do you think I could sell the entire setup for. I have a ton of fish including bala sharks, gouramis, tetras, angels, loaches, plecos and some more I could throw in if it is a local pick up. So what would you all realistically pay. Best answer goes to the most logical and realistic.

ok, i got a rena xp3 filter for my 50 gallon tank. I have a 3 inch red eared slider, i know they are extremely messy sooo thats why i got the filter. I set it up, and it is running accuratly, but it does a horrrrrrrrrrible job filtering the water!!! I thought the rena xp3 was the best canister filter out there so i am wondering why it only filters half of my tank, and the other half is still filled with food, waste, etc. My tank only has one turtle and no fish ( that live there anyways..) and the rena xp3 is designed for heavily stocked 100 gallon aquariums, so i am wondering why it is soo weak, that it is not powerful enough to filter my whole tank!???I only have 40 gallons of water in it!! What should i do, i lost the receipt, so i cant return the filter, and now i am cleaning the tank much more often then i did before with my filter. What a rip off!!!!!!!
