Should I go for a Canister or a Wet/Dry Filter
Question:
I recently bought a 50 gallon tank, and wondering to either set-up a wet/dry filter or install an external canister filter. I'm aware that wet/dry is mainly used for marine aquariums, but also that they often provide better filtration. I want to keep some fancy tosakin goldfish in my aquarium.
Perhaps a canister is still the best option, but if wet/dry filter do a better job and by the looks of it are easily to make yourself it's tempting to go for a a good DIY option.
Do you guys think I should shell $200+ for a canister or build a wet/dry myself. And is the DIY an option anyway?
Thanks a million..
Answer:
I think you can go for the sump set up. It’s a much cheaper solution and the filtration is okay. A really low cost solution is to make the sump from a Tupperware container or an old unused aquarium.
You need to get a good pump and overflow box, that’s the more expensive part. But they are very simple to set up and can be done at a fraction of the cost of a canister

The sump cost more than the tank. All I have is one puffer in a 100 gallon tank. I was thinking of purchasing the Fluval 405 or Rena X4. Will it work? How come the local pet shop keep nagging me about a sump and that it's a "must have"?
Thanks!
Hydor Flo 360° wave maker (closer shot) attached to Eheim Ecco 2236 filter output
This is a closer shot of the Hydor Flo 360° wave maker/deflector is attached to Eheim Ecco 2236 filter output in my planted aquarium. The head rotates slowly 360° using the water flow from the filter, and provides good water circulation in the aquarium. My fish seem to love it as they will sometimes swim against the current for fun! Yes, the bubbles you see are from the DIY CO2 which will show in another video.

Eheim 2217 Filter – First Run – 90 Gallon Planted Aquarium
Just got it in today for my planted 90g. So quiet, better than what I thought. Very pleased. I returned a noisy marineland emp 400 to petco cause it was ridiculously noisy.

Hi, I have recently purchased a 60 litre/16 gallon Rena prisma tank with an efficient inbuilt filtration system but it was second hand and I don't quite know how often I'm supposed to maintain it and change the sponges, charcoal and filter pads. I know I have to rinse the sponge in aquarium water and change the charcoal monthly? what about the filter pads? how often should I clean the pump? The water inlet is often blocked with food or plant bits -should I be scrubbing this daily? What can I use? a tootbrush? is it ok that the food and plant bits get in the system? what about bits of sand or gravel? should I use the gravel vaccum to clean out the box (filtration medium location) regularly too? what exactly are the foam/spnges-have I got the right ones -what's the best and most effective? I have a teeny tiny fantail goldfish and equal sized black moor (please please don't remind me I'm overstocked I know this full well and I will upgrade their tank when I move early next year I promise)
